Rent was due, but I still turned down a client...

Here's why

Years ago, I was worried about paying rent, but I still turned down a paying gig:

After taking a risk to quit my job & start copywriting full time — I was I was about 45 days away from not being able to make rent.

I'd recently finished a big one-off client project and funds were dwindling...

Luckily, I met a potential client who was ready to wire me a good chunk of change for a quick advertorial project, which would allow me some breathing room again...

But there was 1 problem:

Ethically, I didn't agree with the type of angle he wanted to use.

So, instead, I wrote something different, sent it in, and told him — since I didn't deliver exactly what he wanted — that he could just keep the payment and test out my different angle on paid traffic.

In the end, it still ended up as a win:

I got to review the real-world numbers as feedback on my writing...

And just a couple weeks later, I landed a different client who I ended up staying with for 2+ years.

I don't share this to give the impression that I'm perfect...

I've taken on clients that weren't a perfect fit, made mistakes, tried taking shortcuts...

But since the beginning, I've embraced the idea of wanting to build my career on a solid foundation...

Not only because it's the right thing to do...

But because I knew that later I'd be able to speak openly and with pride about my entrepreneurial journey.

Although I considered myself agnostic/ atheist at the time...

I still heard that quiet whisper: "Trust that God will provide."
